Low Air Loss Mattress Systems
Looking for an air mattress with low air loss? We carry a wide variety of hospital grade and home care grade air mattress systems for home care, long term care and hospitals. Low air loss mattresses normally also include alternating pressure and in this article we will discuss “what is low air loss”, “how low air loss works” and the difference between a hospital grade low air loss system from a home care grade air mattress.
What is the Low Air Loss Feature on an Air Mattress?
Low air loss is basically air leaking out from air bladders underneath the patient on the air mattress. These little tiny holes in the air baffles or air bladders as they are called circulate air underneath the patient and whisk away moisture from the skin. This air flow basically keep the skin dry to prevent moisture build up which is a primary factor for getting a bed sore. If a person already has a bed sore this air flow will help dry up the area around the bed sore and then the bed sore itself since there is normally a lot of moisture in and around the skin ulcer area.
What is the Difference Between Low Air Loss in a Hospital Grade Low Air Loss Mattress and Home Care Air Mattress System?
This is one of the biggest questions we answer and will help you understand the price differences in low air loss mattress systems. Low air loss is only as good as the size of the pump or compressor sending air into the mattress and the size of the holes in the air mattress. Small compressors or home care mattress pumps cannot produce enough air to keep the mattress inflated and thus many times the amount of air being circulated over the mattress may not be enough to prevent a pressure wound or bed sore. In many cases the holes are so small they cannot keep the skin dry. In a hospital grade air mattress system many times there are not just one hole on each side of the air bladder but two and it is the size of these air holes that determine how much air is being released and circulated over the top of the mattress. Hospital grade low air loss systems used for wound care and wound care prevention throw a lot more air out and thus that is the determining factor for keeping the person dry and preventing a bed sore or for healing them.
How Do I know if I need a Hospital Grade or Home Care Air Mattress System
Many times this will be determined by the budget. As we have discussed the quality of the low air feature is determined by the size of the pump or compressor. Generally speaking patients either in bed all the time or in bed and then sitting in a chair (immobile patients) are the ones at greatest risk of developing a bed sore and are the ones that would benefit from a hospital grade air mattress. There are many air mattress systems to choose from so cost and price will sometimes also be a factor.
