Hospital Bed Models That Sit Into a Chair Position

Hospital Bed Models That Sit Into a Chair Position

We are often called and speak to people that need a hospital bed that will sit into a “chair position”.  We carry a wide variety of hospital bed models from numerous companies including Hill Rom, Stryker, Med Mizer, Invacare, Linet and more. Almost all bed models made have a “chair position” feature. Basically a chair position includes the bed being elevated with the head and foot being raised up and then using the “Trendelenburg” feature to tilt the bed at an angle. The tilting of the bed helps sits the patient upright
and is beneficial to bodily circulation and healing.

Some hospital beds have a “chair position” button that automatically does the head
and foot up and down with Trendelenburg for the nurse or caregiver however any bed
that has Trendelenburg can be situated in a chair configuration.

The video below shows how a medical bed can be put into a chair position using the
Trendelenburg feature.

So to summarize the “hospital bed into a chair position” information “any bed
that has a Trendelenburg” setting can be put into a chair and any commercial
grade hospital bed made by Hill Rom or Stryker will have the ability to do that.

With that being said below are hospital bed models that can go into a “chair position”.

There are basically two types of chair positions. One version where the person is in bed
in a chair and still exiting off the side of the bed and one where the person can sit
into a chair and be put back into bed. There is only two bed models we sell that have
the ability to sit into a chair and get in and out from the foot of the bed like a chair which include the Hill Rom P1900 TotalCare bed and also the Hill Rom Progressa bed.

Although we do sell both of these bed models there are things to consider when purchasing these bed models.

Hill Rom P1900 TotalCare Sport 2 bed

Hill Rom P1900 TotalCare Sport 2 bed

The Hill Rom P1900 TotalCare Sport bed – This is one of the most popular beds we sell however this bed is very complicated and has hydraulics and other parts not normally used in other hospital bed models. The Hill Rom P1900 TotalCare bed can come with a foam mattress or with various air mattress options with the “Sport” version having the most options and features. Depending on what features are needed from the patient this may be the best option however it is good to know that the Hill Rom P1900 TotalCare bed is complicated and requires the largest number of service calls for beds we sell. Not only does this bed have numerous items that can require service, getting certified technicians that know how to work on this bed can also be difficult. it is for this reason I am writing this article to provide other options for people looking for a hospital bed that can sit into a chair that have fewer service calls and are more reliable.

If you need a hospital bed with an air mattress system that has “lateral rotation“, alternating pressure and low air loss we have multiple air mattress options that can go on other bed frames and create a more reliable option for the client. If you must have a chair where the patient gets in and out from the bed like a chair and not off the side of the bed
or must have a “percussion- vibration” feature then the Hill Rom P1900 TotalCare Sport
bed is one of only two options available.

Hill Rom Progressa Hospital Bed Chair Position

Hill Rom Progressa Hospital Bed Chair Position

The Hill Rom Progressa Hospital bed is basically an upgraded version of the Hill Rom TotalCare Sport 2 except Hill Rom got rid of all of the hydraulic features and made the bed with less moving parts “aka” more reliable and less service calls. This is an awesome bed and has all of the same features as the Hill Rom P1900 TotalCare Sport bed but is 100% electric and no hydraulics. Although this bed is awesome it is expensive. I have seen invoices from home use buyers exceed $80,000. Even in the “used refurbished hospital bed” market these normally sell for about $20-$25,000 because they are hard to find and are primarily coming from home use patients who paid top dollar for them. As time goes on and these beds start coming from hospitals the prices will go down but as of right now this is where they are in price.  This is probably the best bed that sits into a chair position however the prices are very expensive and out of reach for the majority of people we work with.

With that being said lets look at some cheaper options that are more reliable and also offer a high level of patient care for patients are risk of getting bed sores and pressure wounds.

I am going to break down air mattress features so you can understand what features you can add to full electric beds and what these features do.

Replacement Air Mattress Systems – What Are They and What Do They Offer

A replacement air mattress is basically an air mattress system that “replaces” a foam mattress on a hospital bed. We rent a lot of hospital beds to hospitals that need a “wound care” surface for people with bed sores or pressure wounds or at risk of getting bed sores and these “replacement air mattress systems” are very good at taking care of these types of patients. “Replacement air mattresses” have a variety of features including low air loss, alternating pressure, wave feature and also lateral rotation. You are able to get air mattress systems with various options with air mattress systems with “lateral rotation” having the most features and being the highest level of patient care.

What is “Lateral Rotation” and How Does It Work ?
Lateral rotation is a feature on an air mattress where one side of the mattress inflates while the other side deflates and thus helps turn the person in bed with the assistance of the mattress. This offers pulmonary benefits along with changing the pressure points of the body that are making contact with the mattress surface. This is one of the most important features requested for patients that have bed sores or pressure wounds or are at risk of getting bed sores.

What is “Low Air Loss” and How Does It Work?
Low air loss is air conditioned air going over the top of the mattress surface. The benefit and goal of low air loss is the keep the patient dry and also dry up the areas around bed sores and wounds. Keeping the area dry around a wound is key in helping it heal. Some
“low air loss” systems are betting than others. It depends on the amount of air being pushed under the mattress and the size of the holes the air is going through under the mattress. Terms like “Micro air” basically are tiny holes that have minimum low air loss benefits where are commercial grade air mattresses have larger holes and push a larger amount of air for maximum benefit.

What is Alternating Pressure and How Does It Work?
Alternating pressure basically changes the pressure points the body makes contact with on the mattress. Underneath the shell of the mattress are a series of “air bladders” which hold air. “Alternating pressure” includes every other air bladder or every third air bladder slightly deflating to change the places on the body making contact with the mattress. Ideally an air mattress that has every third air bladder will keep the body suspended on a larger percentage of an air surface however even an air system with every other air bladder and 50% is better than not having this feature. This is another key feature to treating and preventing bed sores.

We offer a host of air mattress options however here are the 2 best air mattresses we sell that include the “lateral rotation” feature.

Stryker GoBed 2 hospital bed in a chair position with a replacement air mattress

1. Pro 7000 Mattress System – $2,500 – includes low air loss, alternating pressure, lateral rotation. This is an excellent mattress system and comes with a full 2 year warranty. The lateral rotation – lateral turning feature can be changed from 5 minutes to 90 minutes and also multiple degrees of turn. Excellent mattress system.

Prius Duet Air Mattress Overview

2. Prius Duet Mattress System – priced higher – contact us for price since this can vary if you also buy a hospital bed. This air mattress system has some additional features the Pro 7000 does not have including a “wave feature” and the ability to perform multiple functions and has some other material that reduce shear or friction of the skin on the mattress system. These are the mattresses we rent to hospitals for wound care surfaces and wound care treatment and prevention.
